< Back To The USED TIRE PROBLEM

Birch Energy is investigating offering the asphalt plant option to our franchisees that will mainly be cities that require an enormous supply of asphalt for repair and maintenance of roads and parking lots. Asphalt is comprised of sand, stone and tar and by adding crumb rubber to asphalt vastly improves the quality and durability of the pavement. Crumb rubber consists of very small tire shreds screened to consistent size of between 1/16" to 1/4" in diameter. With relatively small modifications to our shredding process, we can produce crumb rubber. Crumb rubber asphalt is vastly superior to standard asphalt as the Jane Pauly/Stone Philips TV special will demonstrate. When we process our tire derived fuel oil into low sulfur diesel and gasoline, substantial amounts of bituminous tar is produced as a byproduct and this tar can be used to make asphalt. Asphalt plants require an enormous amount of fuel for drying sand and stone and also for heating asphalt tar so it will mix properly.

Our tire recycling process produces most of the components needed for asphalt production excluding sand and stone. (Heating fuel, bituminous tar and crumb rubber) Pavement made with crumb rubber lasts more than twice as long as standard asphalt and it can be applied with half the thickness! Cities that purchase a franchise from BEC will realize substantial savings by producing their own crumb rubber asphalt for their city's needs and by utilizing  tire derived fuel oil or syngas for drying and heating the asphalt mix. Crumb rubber asphalt is more durable, smoother, less prone to cracking and wear and is a safer surface for vehicles than standard asphalt. Using crumb rubber asphalt is far more cost effective for cities to use.
